Advancing sustainable public procurement in the Asia Pacific

Sustainable public procurement (SPP) offers a powerful tool for advancing the Asia Pacific’s green transition, addressing pressing infrastructural needs and tackling emissions. By adopting an enabling governance framework underpinned by targeted, industry-specific rules to promote eco-friendly alternatives, embrace circular economy principles, and prioritise green construction and nature-based solutions, SPP can significantly reduce environmental impacts, especially in environmentally-intensive sectors like construction. But challenges remain in harmonising regulations and ensuring widespread adoption. Governments must adopt stringent policies and foster collaboration to create resilient, low-carbon economies while driving long-term social, economic and environmental benefits.

Sustainable public procurement (SPP) is an essential strategy for advancing social, economic and environmental objectives. Public procurement represents 13–20 per cent of global GDP and at least 15 per cent of the world’s emissions. By improving resource efficiency and promoting climate-friendly alternatives, SPP can accelerate the green transition.
